In a brazen violation of the ceasefire agreement, Pakistani Rangers opened unprovoked fire along the International Border (IB) in Jammu's Makwal sector on Wednesday evening, sparking a 20-minute exchange of heavy fire with the Border Security Force (BSF). Thankfully, no Indian casualties or damage were reported, officials confirmed.
This incident marks a worrying escalation in cross-border tensions, coming just a week before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to Jammu and Kashmir. The visit, set for February 20th, includes a public rally aimed at showcasing normalcy in the Union Territory.
According to BSF officials, the Pakistani Rangers initiated firing around 5.50 pm. BSF personnel stationed at the outpost in Makwal sector responded swiftly and effectively, ensuring no breach of Indian territory. This incident follows a series of ceasefire violations in recent months, including:
- November 8-9, 2023: A BSF jawan lost his life in firing by Pakistani Rangers in the Ramgarh sector of Samba district, marking the first such fatality since the February 25, 2021, ceasefire agreement.
- October 26, 2023: Two BSF personnel and a civilian woman sustained injuries in cross-border firing in the Arnia sector of Jammu.
- October 17, 2023: Another BSF jawan was injured in a similar incident in the Arnia sector.
