As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, the Pakistani military appears to be bracing for a possible retaliatory strike by India.

Sources within Pakistan’s military establishment revealed on Wednesday that naval forces, including frigates and submarines, have been strategically positioned at their respective harbours. The move is aimed at ensuring readiness to counter any potential Indian military maneuvers in the region.

Simultaneously, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has scaled back its flying operations by more than 50 percent. According to military sources, only essential flights are currently being conducted in an effort to maintain clarity and prevent any confusion in the country’s airspace.

The heightened alert follows a wave of global scrutiny and mounting diplomatic pressure on Islamabad in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which left 26 people dead. In response, Pakistani leadership has intensified its rhetoric, accusing India of leveling unfounded charges.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, issued a formal statement asserting that Pakistan possesses “credible intelligence” indicating India intends to initiate military action against Pakistan within the next 24 to 36 hours.

In a post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Tarar wrote, “Pakistan has credible intelligence that India intends to carry out military action against Pakistan in the next 24-36 hours on the pretext of baseless and concocted allegations of involvement in the Pahalgam incident.”

He further stated, “India’s self-assumed role as Judge, Jury, and Executioner in the region is reckless and is vehemently rejected. Pakistan has itself been a victim of terrorism and fully understands the suffering it causes. We have consistently condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations worldwide. As a responsible nation, Pakistan offered a credible, transparent, and independent investigation led by a neutral commission of experts, which was welcomed in good faith.”

In another significant development, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar claimed during a speech in the National Assembly that due to Pakistan’s intervention, the name of The Resistance Front (TRF)—a known offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba—was removed from the United Nations Security Council’s statement on the Pahalgam attack. The move is being interpreted by many observers as a reflection of Pakistan’s ongoing alignment with groups tied to terrorism.

On the diplomatic front, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reached out to the international community on Tuesday. In a phone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s stance on terrorism and urged for an impartial probe into the Pahalgam incident.

“Had a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. I reaffirmed Pakistan's condemnation of terrorism in all its forms, rejected baseless Indian accusations, and called for a transparent and neutral investigation into the Pahalgam incident,” Sharif wrote in a post on X. He added, “Pakistan remains committed to peace but will defend its sovereignty with full force if challenged.”

These developments follow India's firm response to the Pahalgam attack, which it attributes to Pakistan-backed elements. The growing military readiness and diplomatic exchanges indicate a further deterioration of relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
