The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India released a statement on Friday regarding the tragic crash of Air India Flight VT-ANB in Ahmedabad, which was welcomed by the Airline Pilots' Association – India (ALPA-I). The fatal incident, which occurred on June 12, claimed 260 lives.

ALPA-I endorsed the AAIB’s public appeal urging the media and general public to refrain from engaging in speculation or drawing premature conclusions while the investigation remains ongoing. The association described the move as crucial to ensuring the integrity of the investigative process and respecting those affected by the tragedy. “We thank the AAIB for addressing public concerns and making a much-needed appeal to the media and public to refrain from speculation, premature conclusions, or unverified narratives while the investigation is ongoing,” ALPA-I stated in an official release. “This is a vital step in protecting the integrity of the investigative process and the dignity of all those affected.”

On Thursday, the AAIB had raised strong concerns about 'selective and unverified reporting' by certain international media outlets in the immediate aftermath of the AI171 crash. The agency emphasized the need for restraint to preserve the credibility and objectivity of the investigation. As a professional body representing India’s airline pilots, ALPA-I reiterated its longstanding position that such tragic incidents must be investigated with the highest standards of diligence, transparency, and impartiality.

The association also renewed its request to be included in the investigation process—at the very least in the capacity of an observer. ALPA-I argued that the inclusion of frontline professionals would enhance the credibility and depth of the inquiry, while also bolstering public confidence in its findings. “We have written several letters and formal communications to both the AAIB and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), requesting to be included in the investigative process, at the very least as observers,” the statement noted. “This would ensure that the perspectives of frontline professionals are considered and that the process maintains public trust.”

ALPA-I pointed out that international best practices, as outlined in Paragraphs 5.24 and 5.25 of ICAO Annex 13, allow for such participation. These guidelines permit pilot associations and unions to be included as technical advisers during investigations, provided they have the necessary qualifications.

“In countries like the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, it is routine practice for pilot unions and associations to assist in accident investigations in such a capacity,” the association explained. “ALPA-I once again renews its request to be included as an observer in the ongoing investigation of VT-ANB, to contribute professionally and help strengthen the safety framework of Indian aviation.” Reaffirming its commitment to aviation safety, ALPA-I emphasised that its objective aligns fully with that of the AAIB—to uncover the root causes of the accident in order to prevent future occurrences.

“We remain committed to supporting the AAIB in this mission and urge all stakeholders—including media personnel, analysts, and commentators—to avoid speculative or sensational interpretations,” the statement concluded. “This is especially important on sensitive matters such as crew conduct or mental health, until all facts have been thoroughly established.”
