Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed confidence that India-United States relations would strengthen under the stewardship of Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor, who called on him in New Delhi during his six-day visit to India.

Gor, whose appointment as the US Ambassador to India was recently confirmed by the US Senate, is accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas. His visit comes at a crucial time for the two nations, as both seek to reinforce diplomatic and strategic convergence amid recent trade frictions.

“Glad to receive Sergio Gor, Ambassador-designate of the US to India. I'm confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership,” Modi said in a post on X.

The two countries have witnessed a period of strain following Washington’s decision to impose 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports, a move that had triggered sharp concern in New Delhi. However, diplomatic engagement has continued, with recent phone conversations between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi signalling an effort to restore balance and reaffirm mutual commitment to strategic cooperation.

Gor’s arrival is being viewed as a chance to recalibrate the partnership, which has grown into one of the most consequential bilateral relationships of the 21st century. Over the past decade, India and the United States have expanded ties in defence, technology, clean energy and critical minerals, underscored by a shared emphasis on a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Diplomatic observers see Gor’s tenure as a test of how swiftly Washington and New Delhi can steer past current trade tensions and refocus on the long-term vision of a rules-based international order. His visit is also expected to pave the way for renewed discussions on investment, education exchange and regional security cooperation.

Gor, a political strategist and close associate of former US officials, has previously worked on several initiatives that align with the US Indo-Pacific framework. His appointment reflects Washington’s intent to maintain strong continuity in policy towards India despite trade disputes.
