Guwahati is on high alert as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for a two-day visit to Assam from Saturday, with final arrangements being put in place for a packed schedule that includes major infrastructure inaugurations, public meetings and political engagements.

According to the official itinerary, Modi is expected to arrive at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport around 2.30 pm. Soon after landing, he will unveil an 80-foot statue of Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam’s first chief minister, outside the airport’s newly constructed terminal named in his honour.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the new terminal built at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore and spend around 15 minutes inspecting the facility. The terminal project is being positioned as a major upgrade to Assam’s aviation infrastructure.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma flagged the build-up to the visit on social media. “Excitement at its peak! LGBI Airport's Integrated Terminal is all decked up to welcome Adarniya @narendramodi ji tomorrow! Just a few hours to go!” Sarma posted on X.

Following the airport events, Modi will address a public meeting outside the terminal complex before embarking on a roadshow to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s state headquarters in the Basistha area. He is scheduled to interact with party workers there.

Sarma said the visit to the party office would mark a first in Assam’s political history, claiming that no Prime Minister has previously visited the BJP’s state headquarters.

The Prime Minister will stay overnight at the state guest house at Koinadhora in the Khanapara area.

On Sunday morning, Modi will take part in the ‘Pariksha pe Charcha’ programme, interacting with 25 meritorious students from different schools for about half an hour. The interaction will take place aboard the cruise ship ‘Charaideo’ while sailing on the River Brahmaputra.

After the cruise, Modi will visit the newly constructed ‘Swahid Smarak Kshetra’, dedicated to the memory of 860 martyrs of the Assam movement against illegal infiltration. He will pay tributes at the eternal lamp, tour the martyrs’ gallery, and garland the statue of Khargeswar Talukdar, the first person killed during the movement.

The Prime Minister will later travel to Dibrugarh and proceed to Namrup, where he will perform the ‘Bhumi Pujan’ for a Rs 12,000 crore ammonia-urea fertiliser plant. He is also scheduled to address a public meeting at Namrup before returning to New Delhi.

Preparations for the visit were reviewed on Thursday evening at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, attended by senior officials and representatives of stakeholder departments.

“Reviewed preparations related to security, traffic and crowd management, parking, venue readiness, medical and emergency services, power and communication backup, sanitation, and inter-departmental coordination, including arrangements at arrival points, terminal access gates, ceremonial areas, and movement corridors,” Kota posted on X.

He directed all departments and agencies involved to ensure seamless coordination and timely execution of the approved programme.
