Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made a historic landing at the Northeast’s first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in Moran, Assam, marking a milestone in regional strategic infrastructure. The Rs 100-crore, 4.2-km reinforced stretch on National Highway-37 can handle IAF fighter jets and transport aircraft, boosting defence, logistics, and disaster response capabilities.

“It is a matter of immense pride that the Northeast gets an Emergency Landing Facility. From a strategic point of view and during times of natural disasters, this facility is of great importance,” Modi said on social media.

He arrived from Chabua airfield and personally observed an aerial display by IAF fighter jets and transport helicopters, demonstrating precision take-offs and landings for emergencies.

Launch of major development projects

During his day-long visit, Modi inaugurated projects worth Rs 5,450 crore, including:

  • Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge (Rs 3,030 crore) connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati
  • Temporary campus of IIM Guwahati (Rs 555 crore)
  • AI-enabled hyperscale data centre at Lachit Ghat (Rs 348 crore)
  • 225 electric buses under PM-eBus Sewa Scheme (100 for Guwahati, 50 for Nagpur, 50 for Bhavnagar, 25 for Chandigarh)
  • The projects aim to strengthen infrastructure, education, digital capacity, and green transport in Assam.

PM lambasts Congress for 'Northeast neglect'

At a rally attended by BJP workers, Modi targeted Congress over Assam unrest, alleging the party “neglected the Northeast and promoted insurgency.” He said, “The Congress indulged in polarisation and vote-bank politics… the 'MMC', Maoist, Muslim League, Congress, people should be aware of their intentions.”

He also contrasted BJP’s record with Congress: “For seven decades, Congress built only three bridges over the Brahmaputra. BJP built five in 10 years.” Modi emphasised the need to return a double-engine BJP government for the region’s development and security.

Modi encourages Assam BJP cadres

Modi credited party workers as the “oxygen of the BJP” and urged them to engage with voters before and after the elections. He expressed confidence that BJP would win Assam’s 2026 Assembly polls by a large margin, saying, “It is not just about elections; we must win the hearts and minds of the people.”

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the PM for strengthening Assam’s position and energising BJP workers ahead of the elections.
