PM Modi Announces ₹2 Lakh Aid for 8 Victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed his condolences over the deaths of eight devotees after their car was swept away by a rain-swollen stream near the Maa Baglamukhi Temple in Nalkheda, Agar Malwa district, Madhya Pradesh, on September 19, 2026.

The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each person who died. Those injured in the accident will receive Rs 50,000.

In a statement, the Prime Minister's Office described the incident as extremely painful and said condolences were being offered to the families who lost their loved ones. The statement also confirmed the compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each deceased victim's family and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

The victims included three children, two women and three men. They were residents of Odisha and had travelled from Ujjain to visit the temple. Their identities are still being ascertained.

Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar Soni said the vehicle was attempting to cross the stream when it was caught in the strong current. Administrative officials and rescue teams reached the site and began operations after the accident.

Preliminary findings indicate that the driver may have tried to cross the stream hastily despite the force of the water, resulting in the mishap. Further details are awaited.
