Modi calls Nepal PM Karki offers condolences and support.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke by phone with Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday, extending condolences for the recent loss of life during protests and assuring support for restoring peace and stability in the country.

“Had a warm conversation with Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability. Also, I extended warm greetings to her and the people of Nepal on their National Day tomorrow,” Modi said in a post on X.

During the call, Modi also congratulated Karki on her appointment as prime minister and conveyed best wishes on behalf of the people of India. Prime Minister Karki, in turn, thanked Modi for India’s support and expressed her commitment to further strengthen bilateral ties.

The phone call came after widespread demonstrations in Nepal led by young protesters, which left several people dead and heightened political tensions. Modi said India would stand with Nepal during this period and assist in the “restoration of peace, stability and progress.”

Who is Sushila Karki?

Nepal’s former chief justice, Sushila Karki, took oath as the country’s interim prime minister in a ceremony at the President’s Office on September 12, becoming Nepal’s first woman to hold the post.

Born on June 7, 1952 in Biratnagar, Karki studied political science at Banaras Hindu University in India in 1975 before completing a law degree at Tribhuvan University in 1978.

Karki made history in 2016 when she became Nepal’s first female chief justice. However, the following year she faced an impeachment motion accusing her of “delivering biased verdicts” and interfering in executive jurisdiction.

She was automatically suspended during the investigation but ultimately survived, as the motion failed to gain the required two-thirds majority. She retired from the judiciary in June 2017.

Over her career, Karki has served as a justice of the Supreme Court, senior advocate, and law professor. Her appointment as interim prime minister comes at a sensitive time for Nepal, as the country grapples with political unrest and demands from a new generation of demonstrators calling for reforms.
