Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday commenced a three-day official visit to South Africa to participate in the first-ever G20 Leaders’ Summit to be hosted on the African continent. During his stay in Johannesburg, the Prime Minister will also attend the sixth India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting, which is being organised on the sidelines of the main G20 event.
In a departure statement issued before leaving New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi emphasised that he would articulate India’s viewpoint at the Summit guided by the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and the G20 theme of One Earth, One Family, One Future.
“I will present India’s perspective at the Summit in line with our vision of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and One Earth, One Family and One Future,” PM Modi said in the official statement. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had announced on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Johannesburg, South Africa, from November 21 to 23, to attend the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit, which is being hosted by the Republic of South Africa.
The ministry highlighted that this year’s Summit marks the fourth consecutive G20 Leaders’ Summit to be held in the Global South, underscoring the growing influence and assertive voice of developing nations in shaping global governance.
The Summit will feature three formal plenary sessions where leaders will deliberate on key priorities. Prime Minister Modi is expected to outline India’s positions on the core themes during these discussions.

The first session, focused on inclusive and sustainable economic growth, will address building resilient economies, promoting trade, mobilising development financing, and tackling the challenges posed by global debt distress.
The second session, titled A Resilient World, will cover critical areas such as disaster risk reduction, climate change mitigation and adaptation, achieving just energy transitions, and strengthening food systems.
The third and final session, A Fair and Just Future for All, will deliberate on issues including critical minerals, promoting decent work, and the rapidly evolving global discourse on artificial intelligence.
In addition to the main Summit proceedings, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings with fellow leaders attending the Johannesburg gathering. During the visit, he will also engage with members of the Indian community residing in South Africa.
