Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the media on the first day of the Monsoon session of Parliament, in New Delhi, Monday. Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju and Ministers of State Jitendra Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal and L. Murugan are also seen.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the media on Monday ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, lauded the success of Operation Sindoor—a retaliatory military strike by India targeting terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK)—following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. He also commended India’s global outreach efforts, stating that the recent delegation of Indian MPs had “exposed” Pakistan on international platforms.

Speaking on the significance of the military operation, the Prime Minister said, “This Monsoon Session is a celebration of victory. The entire world has witnessed the strength and precision of India’s military power. The Indian Army achieved 100 percent of its target in Operation Sindoor. Within just 22 minutes, the houses of the masterminds of terrorism were destroyed.” Modi emphasised the need for national unity, especially within Parliament. “The country has seen unity after Operation Sindoor, and I appeal to all leaders to reflect that same unity in Parliament,” he said.

Operation Sindoor was launched as a swift and decisive response to the Pahalgam attack, which targeted tourists in Jammu and Kashmir and raised serious concerns about lapses in internal security. The Prime Minister's comments coincide with the start of the Monsoon Session, which is anticipated to be acrimonious and in which the opposition, led by the Congress, is ready to challenge the government on a number of issues, including the Pahalgam attack and the political events in Bihar leading up to state elections.

Congress has made it clear that national security will be at the forefront of their agenda. Senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Renuka Chowdhury has submitted a notice seeking a discussion on the “lapses in internal security” that allowed the Pahalgam incident to occur.

In addition, she wants to challenge the government's foreign policy choices in the wake of the ceasefire with Pakistan after Operation Sindoor. The political atmosphere within Parliament is anticipated to reflect the intense geopolitical environment outside as the session begins, paving the way for contentious discussions on national leadership, security, and diplomacy.
