Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Kolkata on Sunday, shifting his focus to Singur in Hooghly district for a high-profile government event and public address. This visit comes immediately after an overnight stay in Assam, marking a busy stretch of campaigning and project launches in the eastern region.
The Prime Minister is set to unveil a package of development initiatives valued at over ₹830 crore. The choice of Singur as the venue is particularly symbolic as the site of the abandoned Tata Nano project. It remains a lightning rod for debates over West Bengal's economic future. Modi is widely expected to use the platform to push the BJP’s vision for industrial growth, contrasting it with the state's recent history of industrial flight.
This follows a heavy day of activity on Saturday, where the Prime Minister operated out of Malda. There, he launched several rail and road projects and flagged off the inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper service connecting Howrah and Guwahati.
However, the trip hasn't just been about infrastructure. During his rally in Malda, Modi launched a stinging attack on the TMC government, centering his speech on the issue of illegal infiltration. He alleged that unchecked migration is changing the state's demography and causing social unrest, charging that the ruling party has allowed this to happen under the protection of a "syndicate raj." Today’s appearance in Singur is expected to maintain that aggressive political tone as the state gears up for the upcoming electoral battle.
