Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday evening to lead the Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting, focused on the upcoming Jharkhand elections.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing for the state polls, which will be conducted in two phases, following the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) announcement of the election schedule earlier in the day. The voting dates are set for 13 and 20 November.

The BJP CEC meeting, chaired by PM Modi, will focus on finalising candidates for the Jharkhand Assembly elections. This key meeting is being attended by top BJP leaders, including National President JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP’s election in-charge for Jharkhand, Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the co-incharge for the state elections, and other members of the CEC are also present.

Ahead of this significant meeting, BJP's top brass held a core group meeting for Jharkhand on 7 October at JP Nadda’s residence. This meeting was part of the party’s preparations to discuss strategies and review the political landscape of the state before the official candidate selection process.

The ECI has outlined a detailed schedule for the Jharkhand Assembly elections. The nomination process for the first phase will close on 25 October, and for the second phase on 29 October.

The scrutiny of these nominations is set for 28 October for the first phase and 30 October for the second phase. Candidates will have until 30 October and 1 November, respectively, to withdraw their nominations. The counting of votes for Jharkhand, along with Maharashtra, is scheduled for 23 November.

The state of Jharkhand has a total of 2.60 crore eligible voters. This includes 1.31 crore male voters and 1.29 crore female voters. Notably, there are 11.84 lakh first-time voters and 66.84 lakh young voters, reflecting a significant portion of the electorate.

Additionally, senior citizens above the age of 85 have the option to vote from home, providing them with convenience and accessibility during the election process.

The current term of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly is due to conclude on 5 January 2025. The state has 81 assembly constituencies, and the elections will be held to elect representatives for all of them.

The BJP is aiming to strengthen its presence in Jharkhand and secure a majority in the state assembly. The CEC meeting is crucial for the party as it finalises its candidates, ensuring they are well-prepared to contest and appeal to various voter demographics.

With PM Modi and other senior leaders involved, the party’s focus is on strategic planning and coordination for the election campaign.
