Newly appointed Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu are set to assume their roles on Friday, following a notification issued by the Central government on Thursday evening.
The decision, made by a three-member committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, comes in the wake of the recent resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel.
The selection panel, which includes the Prime Minister, the leader of the Opposition, and a designated Union Cabinet minister, finalized the appointments of Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury participated as the opposition member in the panel.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also attended the meeting where the appointments were confirmed.
The new Election Commissioners are expected to take charge amidst ongoing preparations for upcoming elections across the country.
Gyanesh Kumar, a seasoned bureaucrat from the 1988 Kerala cadre, joins the Election Commission as one of its Commissioners. Kumar, who previously served as Secretary in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, played a significant role during his tenure in overseeing the abrogation of Article 370.
Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, another distinguished bureaucrat, has been selected as an Election Commissioner. Sandhu, hailing from the 1988 Uttarakhand cadre, boasts a remarkable career, having served as the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand.
