Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed grief at the demise of former Bangladesh prime minister, Khaleda Zia, saying he hoped that her “vision and legacy” continue to guide India and Bangladesh’s partnership.
Recalling his last meeting with Zia in 2015 in Dhaka, the prime minister said Zia would be remembered for her contributions towards the development of Bangladesh and for building India-Bangladesh relations.
“Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss,” PM Modi wrote on X.
“I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015. We hope that her vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership. May her soul rest in peace,” he said.
Zia, a three-time prime minister of Bangladesh, breathed her last early Tuesday while receiving treatment at a hospital in Dhaka for prolonged illnesses. She was 80.
She was the first female prime minister of her country and played an important role in restoring democracy after a nine-year military rule following a coup in which her husband was murdered.
