Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to renowned social reformer Jyotirao Phule on his birth anniversary and said his life was dedicated to the ideals of equality, justice and education.
He also said Phule was a pioneer in championing the rights of women and the marginalised and through his efforts, education became a powerful instrument of empowerment.
Phule was born on April 11, 1827, in Maharashtra and died on November 28, 1890.
"On the birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, paying tributes to a visionary social reformer who dedicated his life to the ideals of equality, justice, and education. He was also a pioneer in championing the rights of women and the marginalised," Modi said in a post on X.
"This year, we mark the start of his 200th birth anniversary celebrations. May his thoughts continue to guide everyone in the pursuit of societal progress," he said.
Besides PM, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister JP Nadda, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and other leaders also paid tributes to Jyotiba Phule.
