Resignation by India’s Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reacted on Tuesday to the unexpected announcement of resignation by Dhankhar, and extended his good wishes while acknowledging Dhankhar’s long service to the nation.
“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.
On Monday, Dhankhar, 74, had submitted his resignation to the President, citing medical reasons and the decision to prioritise his health.

In his letter, Dhankhar wrote: “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
With his five-year term having begun in August, 2022, Dhankhar, who also served as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, would have remained Vice President until August, 2027.
Although no further information was available on his health status, the Vice President’s resignation on the very first day of the Monsoon Session of the Parliament triggered a wave of speculation in the media and political circles for its odd and sudden timing, as well as reasons hitherto unknown.
Dhankhar’s resignation letter has now been forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs, which will issue an official notification soon.
