Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting on Sunday to review the post-cyclone situation in the northeastern states of India. Cyclone Remal has caused significant devastation, with over three dozen lives lost and more than two lakh people affected by flash floods, heavy rains, and landslides over the past few days.
During the meeting, PM Modi assessed the damage and discussed ongoing relief efforts. Continuous rainfall and landslides have isolated parts of the northeast, submerging railway tracks and leading to the cancellation of express, passenger, and goods trains bound for south Assam, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram since Tuesday.
The Prime Minister expressed his grief over the situation and assured that the Centre is providing all possible support to the affected states. He emphasised that the central government is closely monitoring the situation, with officials working on the ground to assist those in need.
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi shared his concerns, saying, “Unfortunately, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal have witnessed natural disasters in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected there.
Took stock of the prevailing situation. The Central Government has assured all possible support to the states and is continuously monitoring the situation. Officials are working on the ground to assist those affected.”
In addition to the cyclone review, PM Modi will hold several other meetings, including a session to prepare for the celebration of World Environment Day on June 5.
He will also conduct a brainstorming session to review the agenda for the new government’s first 100 days, following the exit polls' prediction of a massive win for the BJP in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
The exit polls, announced after the conclusion of the seventh and final phase of polling on Saturday, predict that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is set for a significant victory in the Lok Sabha elections. They suggest that the ruling party at the Centre will improve its performance in several states currently governed by opposition parties.
The Lok Sabha elections were conducted in seven phases, from April 19 to June 1, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the BJP’s campaign. The exit polls have indicated that the NDA is on track to secure a majority, potentially marking a third consecutive term for PM Modi’s government.
The focus now shifts to the counting of votes and the official results, which will determine the exact composition of the new government. Meanwhile, the immediate concern remains the recovery and relief efforts in the northeastern states impacted by Cyclone Remal. The central and state governments continue to work together to restore normalcy and support the affected communities in these regions.
