Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to distribute certificates to 11 lakh women beneficiaries of the 'Lakhpati Didi' scheme on August 25 in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, as announced by Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday.
The announcement was made during an event attended by women Self Help Group (SHG) members who have benefitted from both the 'Lakhpati Didi' and 'Namo Drone Didi' initiatives.
These women are currently in the national capital to participate in the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort.
The 'Namo Drone Didi' scheme provides subsidies to women SHGs for purchasing drones, while a 'Lakhpati Didi' refers to an SHG member whose annual income exceeds Rs 1 lakh.
Chouhan expressed the government's ambition to reach a target of three crore 'Lakhpati Didis' and confirmed that certificates would be awarded to 11 lakh women on August 25.
While some recipients will attend the ceremony in Jalgaon, others will receive their certificates in their respective villages.
Highlighting a shift in societal norms, Chouhan remarked, “There was a time when sons were preferred, but efforts are underway to change this mindset. A new India is emerging under Modi, where our sisters will not be left behind. The 'Lakhpati Didis' who have risen above poverty are sharing their success stories globally.”
The minister also announced plans to construct an additional two crore houses under the PM Awas Yojana, mentioning that criteria regarding income and two-wheeler ownership have been relaxed to extend benefits to a wider demographic.
According to officials from the Rural Development Ministry, around 45 'Lakhpati Didis' and 30 'Drone Didis' have been invited as special guests for the Independence Day celebrations.
The 'Namo Drone Didi' and 'Lakhpati Didi' schemes are key initiatives aimed at promoting economic empowerment and financial independence for women in rural areas.
