India has called for de-escalation and the swift restoration of peace in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday following a phone call with US President Donald Trump, during which the leaders discussed securing the Strait of Hormuz for global shipping.

The call was initiated by President Trump, a day after he extended Washington’s deadline by five days for Iran to reopen the strategically vital waterway.
“Received a call from President Trump and had a useful exchange of views on the situation in West Asia,” PM Modi tweeted.

He added, “India supports de-escalation and restoration of peace at the earliest. Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the whole world. We agreed to stay in touch regarding efforts towards peace and stability.”

US envoy to India Sergio Gor also noted that the two leaders discussed the importance of keeping the key shipping lane open. “They discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East, including the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open,” Gor said on social media.

On Monday, Trump announced that he had extended the deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and that he would delay strikes on Iranian energy sites for five days. He also mentioned, without providing details, that the US and Iran had engaged in ‘productive conversations’ aimed at a ‘complete and total resolution’ of the West Asia conflict.
