Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated his 75th birthday on Wednesday, with numerous dignitaries and politicians praising his leadership, while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a fortnight-long "Sewa Pakhwada" to mark the occasion for its pre-eminent leader.

BJP-led governments at the Centre and in various states have planned a range of outreach, welfare, development, and awareness initiatives, including health camps, cleanliness drives, gatherings of intellectuals, and fairs to promote indigenous products across the country until October 2.

Modi himself is travelling to Dhar in Madhya Pradesh to launch a nationwide campaign focused on the health and nutrition of women and children. He will also initiate several other development programmes, including one aimed at tribal populations, and address a public meeting.

President Droupadi Murmu extended greetings to Modi, who was born into a modest family in Vadnagar, Gujarat, and commended him for fostering a culture of setting and achieving ambitious goals in the nation.

"Today, the global community is also expressing its faith in your guidance," Murmu said in her birthday message to the Prime Minister.

"Heartfelt birthday greetings and best wishes to the Prime Minister of India, Shri @narendramodi ji. By exemplifying the pinnacle of hard work through your extraordinary leadership, you have instilled a culture of achieving great goals in the country," she said.

In response, Modi expressed gratitude, stating that his government would remain committed to building a strong, capable, and self-reliant India with the support of its over 140 crore citizens, describing her vision and ideas as inspirational.

Vice President CP Radhakrishnan noted that India is making significant strides on the global stage and progressing steadily towards becoming a developed nation under Prime Minister Modi’s visionary leadership.

Speaker Om Birla remarked that Modi’s unparalleled dedication and commitment to the nation serve as an inspiration to every Indian.

BJP leaders and members of other parties extended birthday wishes to Modi, who has steered his party to unprecedented geographical expansion and electoral success since 2014.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that Modi, with his visionary leadership, dedication to the nation, and tireless work ethic, has infused the country with new energy and charted a new direction.

He has enhanced India’s global capability and respect, and his commitment to the welfare of the people and the poor is exemplary, Singh added. Home Minister Amit Shah said Modi has been working relentlessly for the welfare of the people for over five decades, embodying the ‘nation first’ ethos for every citizen.

In posts on X, Shah described him as a symbol of sacrifice and dedication, and an inspiration for crores of countrymen.

The Home Minister noted that from the RSS to the party and the government, Modi’s life journey demonstrates the potential for profound transformations when resolve is as steadfast as the Himalayas and vision is as vast as the ocean.

"The entire nation takes pride in Modi, who has brought unimaginable changes to the lives of crores of citizens and connected them to the journey of building a developed and self-reliant India," he said.

Shah added that for the past four decades, he has had the privilege of observing Modi in various roles—whether as an RSS pracharak, the BJP’s organisational general secretary, Chief Minister of Gujarat, or as the country’s Prime Minister for the past 11 years.

"Modi has always placed the nation first and himself last. Workers like me are fortunate to have had the chance to work with him in every role he has undertaken," he said.

BJP president JP Nadda stated that PM Modi has taken numerous transformative steps to build an “aatmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat” with the aim of advancing every section of society.

Under his leadership, India’s spiritual and cultural heritage have gained global recognition, he added.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari hailed Modi as the world’s most popular leader and expressed hopes that India, under his leadership, would become self-reliant and a “vishwaguru”, eradicating terrorism and corruption.

Actor-turned-politician Hema Malini also extended greetings to PM Modi, describing his tenure as a transformative period that has positioned India as a global power.

In a video message, the BJP MP said Modi’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” has empowered citizens across the country.

Reflecting on her long association with the Prime Minister, the Mathura MP recalled campaigning for him twice when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. She also remembered Modi attending her ballet performance at Brij Raj Utsav in Mathura during the 525th birth anniversary celebrations of Mirabai, when he was Gujarat’s Chief Minister.

“He stayed for two hours to watch my show as the chief guest, which made me feel truly honoured,” she said.

She further noted that Modi shares a deep connection with every citizen of India and shows respect for every party worker.

“It is rare to find someone so sensitive, simple and rooted,” she added.

Highlighting his support, the Mathura MP recalled that Modi had campaigned for her in 2014 at her invitation. “I am fortunate that my public service journey began under his guidance, enabling me to contribute to the welfare of the people of Mathura,” she said.

Modi is the third longest-serving Prime Minister of India, after Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, and the second in terms of uninterrupted tenure.

Under the dual leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani in the late 1980s, the BJP became the primary rival to the Congress. However, since Modi led the party to its first Lok Sabha majority in 2014, it has outperformed the main opposition party in terms of popular support and electoral dominance.

Despite losing the 2024 Lok Sabha elections before the halfway point, the BJP has since recovered under Modi and won significant wins in the Haryana and Maharashtra assembly elections.
