Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called dependence on other nations India’s “biggest enemy” as he pressed for greater self-reliance, linking national dignity and future growth to reducing foreign dependence.

The Prime Minister, who laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects in Gujarat before addressing a rally in Bhavnagar, underlined the urgency of strengthening Atmanirbhar Bharat as global economic headwinds grow sharper.

“Today, India is moving forward with the spirit of ‘Vishwabandhu’. We have no major enemy in the world. Our biggest enemy is our dependence on other countries. This is our biggest enemy, and together we must defeat this enemy of India, the enemy of dependence,” Modi said.

He cautioned that reliance on others could undermine the nation’s long-term prospects. “The greater the foreign dependence, the greater the country’s failure. For global peace, stability, and prosperity, the country with the world’s largest population must become Atmanirbhar. If we remain dependent on others, our self-respect will be hurt. We cannot leave the future of 1.4 billion countrymen to others,” he said.

Modi argued that self-reliance is the only durable solution to challenges confronting the nation. “There is only one medicine for a hundred sorrows, and that is a self-reliant India,” he said, reiterating that India’s development cannot be left at the mercy of outside powers.

The remarks came against the backdrop of heightened concern over US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a steep $100,000 application fee for H-1B visas. The move, far exceeding the median annual salary of a fresh H-1B visa holder, has sparked unease among Indian professionals and policymakers.
