Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam’s Barak Valley on March 14, 2026, to lay the foundation stone for the Rs 22,000-crore Guwahati–Silchar expressway and inaugurate the Silchar flyover, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced.

The proposed expressway is expected to cut travel time between Guwahati and Silchar to about four-and-a-half hours from over eight hours at present by offering a safer and more direct alternative to the existing landslide-prone hill route. The tender process has been completed, wildlife clearances secured and land acquisition has progressed significantly, with construction slated to begin shortly.

The Silchar flyover, which will be inaugurated during the visit, is aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion in the town.

On the proposed greenfield airport in Silchar, Sarma said environmental clearance was received on Thursday, 19 February. Cabinet approval is awaited. “Time is less now, but we will try to start the process by March. If it is not possible, then it will happen after the assembly elections,” he said. The BJP’s candidate list for the forthcoming Assam Assembly polls is likely to be released after the Prime Minister’s visit, he added.

The March 14 programme will mark yet another high-profile visit by Modi to Assam in recent months, underscoring the Centre’s focus on infrastructure-led development in the Northeast ahead of the polls.

Earlier on February 14, the Prime Minister inaugurated projects worth over Rs 5,400 crore, including the first Emergency Landing Facility in the Northeast at Moran in Dibrugarh, the six-lane Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu over the Brahmaputra, the National Data Centre at Amingaon and the temporary campus of IIM Guwahati. He also flagged off 225 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme.

In December 2025, Modi unveiled projects worth around Rs 15,600 crore, including the new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, and in September last year launched infrastructure and industrial initiatives exceeding Rs 18,000 crore. The forthcoming Barak Valley visit continues that sustained push.
