PM unveils major roads, rail, healthcare projects in south

PM Modi inaugurates over Rs 7,100 crore in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, boosting infrastructure, connectivity, education, healthcare, and tourism development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development projects worth over Rs 7,100 crore across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, emphasising inclusive growth, connectivity, healthcare, and education.

The PM inaugurated infrastructure projects worth over Rs 4,400 crore in Tamil Nadu, describing the Centre’s “collective goal” as a developed state for a developed India.

Addressing a gathering in Madurai, the Prime Minister said, “Every Indian is inspired to build a developed nation by 2047. Tamil Nadu will play a decisive role in shaping the nation's destiny.” He assured that the Centre remained committed to inclusive growth and state development.

Projects include four-laning of the Marakkanam–Puducherry and Paramakudi–Ramanathapuram National Highways, redevelopment of eight railway stations, and commissioning the Chennai Beach–Chennai Egmore fourth line. Nine Vande Bharat and nine Amrit Bharat trains, with coaches built at ICF Chennai, serve the state.

Highlighting ecotourism and heritage initiatives, Modi cited developments around Lake Pulicat, Podhigai Malai, and historic sites such as Adichanallur. He noted that Tamil Nadu’s highway network had expanded by over 4,000 km since 2014, and that the railway allocation for the state increased nearly nine-fold, from Rs 880 crore during 2009–14 to Rs 7,600 crore in 2026-27.

The Prime Minister also visited the Arulmigu Subrahmanya Swamy Temple at Tirupparankundram, offering prayers amid tight security arrangements. He was accompanied by Governor R N Ravi, Union Minister L Murugan, and BJP state chief Nainar Nagenthran.

Puducherry gets infra boost

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for development works worth over Rs 2,700 crore, covering infrastructure, education, healthcare, and urban mobility in Puducherry on Sunday.

At NIT Karaikal, he inaugurated the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Engineering Block and modern hostels, while Pondicherry University received infrastructure upgrades. Foundation stones were laid for three critical care blocks under PM-ABHIM and an integrated AYUSH hospital in Karaikal. The modernization of the Regional Cancer Centre at JIPMER was also unveiled.

Modi stressed connectivity, highlighting over Rs 1,000 crore for decongesting Puducherry town, including a Rs 440 crore flyover, and improvements along the East Coast Corridor linking Chennai, Bengaluru, and Coimbatore.

He reiterated the vision of BEST Puducherry: Business, Education, Spirituality, Tourism, citing rising per capita income and the highest Social Progress Index score in the country. Modi underlined tourism, medical tourism potential, and cleaner mobility with electric buses as key pillars of regional development.

The Prime Minister concluded by asserting that Puducherry would play a central role in India’s growth trajectory, supported by the double-engine government’s development push.
