78 Years After 1947, PMO To Leave South Block For New Central Vista Address.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), currently housed in South Block, will move to the newly built Executive Enclave under the Central Vista project next month, government sources said.

The shift marks the end of nearly eight decades of the PMO’s presence in South Block, part of the colonial-era structures that have long been the administrative heart of the Indian government.

The Executive Enclave, located only a few hundred metres away, has been prepared to accommodate the PMO along with other key government offices.

It will also house the Cabinet Secretariat, the National Security Council Secretariat, and a modern conferencing facility. The new office is closer to the Prime Minister’s residence, offering greater convenience.

The relocation comes amid a broader plan to address space shortages and the lack of modern facilities in old government buildings. Officials said the need for new offices reflected India’s aspirations as an emerging economic power.

The earlier structures lacked adequate space, ventilation and lighting, making them unfit for today’s requirements.

Recently, the ministries of Home Affairs and Personnel were moved to Kartavya Bhavan-3, which the Prime Minister inaugurated earlier this month.

During the ceremony, he noted that the nation’s administrative machinery had long functioned out of British-era buildings with outdated facilities. He highlighted how critical ministries such as Home Affairs operated for nearly a century from a single, inadequate structure.

Officials also suggested the new PMO may be given a fresh name, in line with the government’s approach of renaming all Central Vista projects. Reports indicate that the name could reflect the ethos of sewa (service).

In his first address after assuming office for a third term, the Prime Minister said he envisioned the PMO as a “people’s PMO” rather than “Modi’s PMO”, stressing that it should function as a hub of public service.

With the relocation of major offices, North Block and South Block will be transformed into a public museum named Yuge Yugeen Bharat Sangrahalaya. The government said an agreement has been signed between the National Museum and the French Museums Development for collaboration on the project.

The museum aims to showcase India’s cultural heritage, described by officials as “a celebration of timeless and eternal India — to explore our proud past, illuminate the present and imagine the bright future.”
