Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski is to land in Jaipur on Saturday

Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, is set to arrive in India on January 17 for a three-day visit, said the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Sikorski will arrive in Jaipur, Rajasthan, on Saturday, and proceed to attend the Jaipur Literature Festival on January 18. He will reach Delhi later that day, said MEA.

On January 19, he will meet External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, after which he will return to his country.

Sikorski’s visit comes as India is in the final phase of negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, has termed as the “mother of all trade pacts”.

India and Poland share a long-standing friendship that’s marked by high-level political diplomacy and economic engagement, starting from 1954. In 1957, India opened its embassy in Warsaw.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last official visit to Poland was on August 21-22 2024, tagged historic since it marked the visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Poland after 45 years.

The PM held discussions with Polish PM Donald Tusk in restricted and delegation-level formats and also called on the country’s President Andrzej Duda in a tete-a-tete format to hold delegation-level talks with him.

As a result of the PM’s visit, the two countries decided to elevate the India-Poland bilateral relations to the level of a Strategic Partnership, to which effect a joint Statement was issued on the bilateral partnership and Action Plan (2024-2028) to implement the future Strategic Partnership.

The two countries also share common ideological perceptions, based on their opposition to colonialism, imperialism and racism, according to the Embassy of India in Warsaw.

Meanwhile, European Council President, Antonio Costa, and European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, will also visit India to represent the EU at the 16th EU-India Summit, scheduled for January 27.

The India-EU FTA aims to boost bilateral trade between India and the EU, which is already India’s largest trading partner, with goods trade totalling $136.53 billion in 2024-25. The agreement is expected to cover areas such as market access for goods, rules of origin, services, investment, and intellectual property rights.
