Saif Ali Khan's attacker is believed to have connections with one of the house staff, who is also suspected to have facilitated the intruder's entry into the actor's residence, sources within the Mumbai Police said on Thursday.
The staff member is currently being questioned as the police investigate the alarming attack on the 54-year-old actor in one of Mumbai's most upscale neighbourhoods.
The actor has come out of surgery and is currently out of danger. He is currently in recovery, and the doctors are monitoring his progress. All family members are also safe.
The Mumbai Police have revealed that the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan took place at around 2.30 am on Thursday at his residence.
CCTV footage two hours prior to the incident did not show any person entering the actor's housing society, suggesting that the attacker may have been inside the premises.
According to the police, a female staff member at Khan’s home was also injured in the attack.
"At around 3 am we received information that actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked in his home," a senior police official said.
Reports suggest that around 2 am, Saif Ali Khan heard an argument between the intruder and the female staff, prompting him to come out of his room.
Some polishing work has been ongoing in the same building, and the police have been investigating if it was one of those workers.
The attacker reportedly fled the scene after the stabbing, as more individuals in the house woke up.
A manhunt has been launched to apprehend the absconding individual.
DCP Dixit Gedam stated that Saif Ali Khan was admitted to Lilavati Hospital. He further confirmed that a female employee had sustained injuries in the incident.
At least seven teams have been constituted by the police to arrest the accused and to probe the incident from all angles.Police suspect the attacker was inside Saif Ali Khan's society.
Five members of Saif Ali Khan's staff are being questioned for additional details by the Mumbai Police, sources said.
Doctors treating Khan reported that out of the six stab wounds, two were deep, with one located near his spine.
He underwent a two-hour surgery and is now in the recovery room. Once out of the operation theatre, he will be shifted to a deluxe suite on the hospital’s VIP floor.
