Poor visibility of runway, no Mayday call: DGCA reveals reasons

The plane was reportedly attempting an emergency landing after departing Mumbai for campaign events. Preliminary DGCA findings point to technical failure, with the pilot losing control on final approach. A detailed investigation and black box recovery are underway.

The pilots of the aircraft that crashed at Baramati and killed Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar had trouble spotting the runway while attempting to land, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

 

The pilots couldn't spot the runway during their first approach to land and so they did a go-around and came for a second attempt at landing. No Mayday call was given by the crew.The plane was reportedly attempting an emergency landing after departing Mumbai for campaign events. Preliminary DGCA findings point to technical failure, with the pilot losing control on final approach. A detailed investigation and black box recovery are underway.

 

The Learjet 45 business aircraft operated by Delhi-based company VSR Ventures Pvt. Ltd crashed while attempting to  land at Baramati airfield killing all five persons on board.During the second landing attempt, ATC again asked whether the runway was in sight, to which the pilot responded in the affirmative. After the ATC granted landing clearance, the aircraft crashed,teams from the DGCA and AAIB are in Baramati to carry out a probe into the accident

 

Union Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu on Wednesday said that as per the preliminary information, visibility at the Baramati airport was poor when the aircraft carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar crashed. Naidu and Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol flew to Pune from Delhi to attend Pawar's last rites.

 

Pawar and four others on board died after the chartered plane crashed on Wednesday morning. "Teams from the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) and AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau) have arrived to carry out a probe into the accident. Preliminary information suggests that visibility was poor at the time the aircraft was attempting to land," said Naidu.

 

When ATC Baramati asked the pilot whether the runway was in sight, the response was negative, following which the aircraft executed a go-around, he said.During the second landing attempt, ATC again asked whether the runway was in sight, to which the pilot responded in the affirmative, the minister said. After the ATC granted landing clearance, the aircraft crashed, Naidu said, adding, "We are seeking more details and will conduct the investigation in a transparent manner.
