Police have taken action against 217 individuals for their involvement in rioting during the Prajapati Samaj yatra, according to an official statement on Sunday.
The participants, who were part of a 'Sankalp Yatra', aimed to travel to Delhi via Ghaziabad to submit a memorandum to the President of India, demanding reservation and representation in politics. The yatra took place in the Sahibabad site-4 industrial area on Friday night.
When authorities attempted to intervene and stop the procession, the participants resorted to violence, pelting stones at police personnel and causing damage to vehicles. As a result, the police were compelled to disperse the crowd using force.
An FIR was registered at Link Road Police Station on Saturday under sections 147 (rioting) and 188 (violation of prohibitory orders), as stated by Trans-Hindan Deputy Commissioner of Police Nimish Patil.
Although the rally was halted, five individuals were permitted to continue towards Delhi on Saturday. The police are currently reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved in the rioting.
