Prakash Ambedkar’s Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) party has expressed optimism about its performance in the ongoing Maharashtra assembly elections. The party, which has fielded 200 candidates, is hopeful of securing enough seats to play a pivotal role in government formation.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, stated that if the VBA gets the required numbers, it will have the power to choose which side to support in forming the next government.
Ambedkar made it clear that the party will align with the alliance or party capable of forming a stable government.
He wrote, "If VBA gets the numbers, tomorrow, to support a party or an alliance to form the government in Maharashtra, we will choose to be with one who can form the government. We will choose power!"
This statement reflects the party's strategic approach, positioning itself as a crucial player in the post-election political scenario.
The VBA had a modest performance in the 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections, where it contested 236 seats but failed to win any. Despite not securing a seat, the party managed to garner 5.5% of the vote share in the constituencies it contested.
The 2024 elections are seen as a fresh opportunity for the party to make its mark, with Ambedkar's leadership and the party's focus on Dalit and backward class issues.
As the voting for the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly concluded on November 20, all eyes are now on the results, set to be declared on November 23.
With a hung assembly a possibility, the VBA's decision on which side to support could play a crucial role in shaping the next government in Maharashtra.
