President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has written to the West Bengal government regarding the alleged assault on the mother of the RG Kar rape-murder victim by Kolkata police during a protest marking the first anniversary of her daughter’s death at the state-run medical facility.

Sources said the President emailed the state’s Chief Secretary, Manoj Pant, seeking details of action taken following allegations that the victim’s mother was attacked on August 9. No official statement has been issued by the state government as of Saturday.

The victim’s father confirmed the development, stating, “The President has written to the Chief Secretary to know what steps have been taken after the attack on my wife. I have also received an email where the President assured us that her aide will remain in touch with our family. Now we have some hope. If they cooperate, it will be easier for us to get justice.”

On August 9 last year, the body of a postgraduate medical student was recovered from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Exactly a year later, her parents began a campaign demanding justice. During that protest on a road in central Kolkata, the victim’s mother was allegedly assaulted, with the family accusing police officers of involvement.

Following the incident, the President personally wrote to the family on August 13, assuring assistance. Her aide, under secretary Gautam Kumar, has reportedly been tasked with maintaining contact with the family.

Meanwhile, in the original case, former civic volunteer of Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. A case is pending in a higher court seeking capital punishment for him. Investigations into whether others were involved in the incident remain incomplete.

The victim’s parents, while continuing their street protests, have also written to President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They have met the CBI Director as well, pressing for a thorough investigation and strict punishment for all involved.
