Budget session begins with Presidents address on January 31.

The upcoming Budget session of the Indian Parliament is set to commence on January 31, with President Droupadi Murmu addressing both Houses at 11 am in the Lok Sabha Chamber.

This marks the beginning of a crucial phase in the parliamentary calendar, with the Union Budget scheduled for presentation on February 1. The Budget session will be held in two phases: the first from January 31 to February 13, and the second from March 10 to April 4.

President Murmu's address is a significant moment, marking the formal start of the session. Following this, a three-day discussion on the President’s Address will take place, with the Motion of Thanks being debated in both Houses.

The dates for this discussion have been provisionally set for February 3, 4, and 6, 2025. On February 6, a response will be delivered, bringing the formal exchange of views on the President’s address to a close.

As the Budget session draws near, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has announced that the government will host an all-party meeting on January 30, just a day before the session starts.

This meeting aims to foster cooperation among opposition leaders and ensure smooth discussions in Parliament throughout the session. Rijiju emphasised the importance of cooperation from all political parties to allow for constructive debates and deliberations during the upcoming session.

Rijiju also expressed optimism about the presentation of a balanced and well-received Union Budget by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1. He acknowledged that there were some disruptions in previous sessions, which had led to negative perceptions of Parliament’s functioning.

Despite these challenges, Rijiju urged opposition leaders and all Members of Parliament (MPs) to engage in productive discussions and ensure that the session proceeds without unnecessary disruptions.

He stressed that the smooth functioning of Parliament would allow for more meaningful and effective debates on important issues, including the Union Budget.
