President Murmu to confer Padma awards 2026 on May 25

This year, the Government of India has announced a total of 131 Padma Awards. These include five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awards. Among the awardees, 19 are women, while 16 individuals will be conferred posthumously.

President Droupadi Murmu will present Padma Awards for 2026 on May 25. In a social media post, the Ministry of Home Affairs said the President will confer the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri Awards at the first Civil Investiture Ceremony to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

 

This year, the Government of India has announced a total of 131 Padma Awards. These include five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awards. Among the awardees, 19 are women, while 16 individuals will be conferred posthumously.

 

The Padma Awards, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, are amongst the highest civilian awards of the country. Instituted in 1954, these Awards are announced on the Republic Day every year. The Award seeks to recognise work of distinction and is given for distinguished and exceptional achievements in various fields and disciplines, including Art, Literature, Education, Sports, Medicine, Social Work, Science and Engineering, Public Affairs and Trade and Industry.

 

The 2026 Padma Awards were officially announced on the eve of Republic Day by the Government of India, honouring 131 distinguished individuals. The prestigious civilian list comprises five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awards.

 

Padma Vibhushan, five in number, are  conferred for exceptional and distinguished service. Notable recipients include veteran actor Dharmendra Singh Deol (Posthumous), former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan (Posthumous), renowned violinist N. Rajam, and Kerala scholar P. Narayanan.

 

In the Padma Bhushan category (13), the awards are  conferred for distinguished service of a high order. Honorees include actor Mammootty, singer Alka Yagnik, veteran tennis player Vijay Amritraj, and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren (Posthumous).

 

And in the Padma Shri category,  113 persons will be honoured for distinguished service in various fields. Notable figures in sports and entertainment include Indian cricketers Rohit Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur, hockey player Savita Punia, and actor Prosenjit Chatterjee.
