In recent political developments, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi voiced strong criticism against Sunil Raut’s recent remarks, calling them both sexist and indicative of a larger issue of misogyny. Raut, who used the term "Bali ka Bakra" (meaning “sacrificial goat”) in reference to a female political candidate, has faced backlash for what many have interpreted as a disparaging comment.
Chaturvedi condemned the remark as harmful and indicative of the ongoing struggles women face in politics and public life. She highlighted the importance of respect toward women in politics and reiterated the need for the implementation of the 33% reservation for women in political spaces.
In her statement, Chaturvedi said, “He used the term ‘Bali ka bakra.’ This expression reflects misogyny and sexism. It is unfortunate that, in today’s time, such terms are still being used about women.
Respect for women is about their representation and position in politics, and this is why the 33% reservation is essential.” Chaturvedi's comments underline her commitment to advancing women's representation and safeguarding their dignity in political discourse.
In addition to her criticism of Raut's remarks, Chaturvedi raised concerns about the condition of services for passengers at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. Reports from travellers have pointed to inadequate facilities, sparking fears of a potential stampede similar to the incident at Bandra.
Chaturvedi shared that she has reached out to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) regarding these issues, expressing worry about overcrowding and the lack of sufficient services. “I have received many phone calls from people saying that no services are being provided at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus for railway passengers. People are concerned about a possible stampede-like situation, similar to what happened at Bandra,” she said.
Despite assurances from the railway minister about additional trains and improved arrangements, passengers are reportedly experiencing poor conditions, leading to further public concern.
The controversy around Sunil Raut intensified as an FIR was filed against him for his remarks. Raut, who is the Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate for the Vikhroli constituency, has been accused of making objectionable comments toward Suvarna Karanje, the candidate from the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The FIR, filed under Sections 79, 351(2), and 356(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alleges that Raut’s language during a recent rally was inappropriate. In his speech, he reportedly referred to Karanje as a “goat,” a term widely criticised for its disrespectful implications.
Raut, a seasoned political figure who previously secured the Vikhroli seat in the 2014 and 2019 elections, faces a challenging electoral battle this year. Alongside Karanje, who represents the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, he is also competing against Vishwajeet Dholam from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). As this heated contest unfolds, issues of respect, gender equality, and political decorum have taken centre stage, with Chaturvedi's comments bringing further attention to the broader challenges faced by women in Indian politics.
