The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced its candidates for the upcoming by-elections in four Assembly constituencies in Punjab, set to take place on November 13. This move reflects the party's strategy to strengthen its presence in the state ahead of the polls.
From Gidderbaha, AAP has nominated Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon, who recently transitioned from the Shiromani Akali Dal to join AAP. His induction into the party was facilitated by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, indicating the party's intent to bring experienced politicians on board. Dhillon's experience and connections within the political landscape could prove beneficial for AAP in Gidderbaha.
For the Barnala seat, the party has selected Harinder Singh Dhaliwal. Dhaliwal is a close associate of Sangrur MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, which could help solidify AAP's influence in this region.
In Dera Baba Nanak, Gurdeep Singh Randhawa has been chosen as the candidate. Randhawa serves as the party’s constituency in-charge, which gives him a solid understanding of local issues and dynamics.
Ishaan Chabbewal has been named as the candidate for the Chabbewal seat. Each of these candidates brings unique strengths and connections that AAP hopes will resonate with voters.
These four Assembly seats became vacant following the election of their MLAs to the Lok Sabha earlier this year. Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, the Congress MLA from Gidderbaha, was elected to the Lok Sabha from Ludhiana.
Raj Kumar Chabbewal, who was also a Congress MLA, switched his allegiance to AAP and became an MP from Hoshiarpur. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, the former Congress legislator from Dera Baba Nanak, was elected from Gurdaspur, while Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer from Barnala secured a seat in the Sangrur Lok Sabha.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for these by-elections on October 15. Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer, Sibin C., provided important details regarding the election process.
The last date for filing nominations is October 25, followed by the scrutiny of nomination papers on October 28. Candidates have until October 30 to withdraw their nominations.
Voting for the by-elections will take place on November 13, with results expected to be declared on November 23. The total number of voters across the four constituencies is 696,316, with 831 polling stations set up to facilitate the electoral process.
In Dera Baba Nanak, there are 193,268 voters and 241 polling stations. Chabbewal has 159,254 voters and 205 polling stations. Gidderbaha's electorate numbers 166,489, with 173 polling stations. Finally, the Barnala Assembly seat has 177,305 voters and 212 polling stations.
