The Punjab police have apprehended two individuals after they were caught with sophisticated pistols on Saturday. The suspected weapons were smuggled from the country of Pakistan, police officials said.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said that the two individuals were arrested from Nurpur Padhri in Amritsar.

In a post on X, the DGP Yadav wrote, “In a major blow to illegal arms smuggling networks, Counter Intelligence, Amritsar apprehends 2 persons from Nurpur Padhri, near Gharinda, Amritsar, while they were waiting for another operative to handover the weapon consignment smuggled from Pakistan.”

Subsequently, a case under the arms act was also registered in Amritsar, police said. Adding that investigations were underway to establish back-and-forth linkages about the alleged arms smuggling case.

Police said it recovered eight sophisticated weapons—four Glock pistols (made in Austria), two Turkiye 9mm pistols, and two X-Shot Zigana pistols—along with 10 rounds.

Almost a week before, on November 22, Amritsar Police had busted a trans-border arms smuggling racket.

Six people were arrested, and approximately 10 pistols, including three sophisticated 9mm Glocks along with 10 cartridges, were recovered from the possession of the accused persons, said DGP Yadav.

Those arrested were identified as Vinod Kumar alias Rangeela of Putlighar, Yuvraj Singh and Surkhap Singh of village Roriwala in Amritsar, Jugraj Singh alias Jaggu of Plah Sahib road in Amristar, Amritpal Singh of village Sherpur in Batala, and Prabhdeep Singh alias Harman of village Mumrai in Batala, a

press release said.

In recent years, Border States like Punjab, Jammu, and Kashmir have become epicentres of cross-border narcotics and arms smuggling.

According to police, this alleged network, backed by foreign smugglers, drops weapons and arms via drones and other means.

The problem of drugs and arms smuggling in India through a cross-border nexus poses a significant security risk. States like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Haryana have been worse affected in recent years.
