Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has called for increased compensation for the families affected by the tragic Hathras stampede incident, which claimed the lives of at least 121 devotees during a religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh.
Following his visit to Hathras on July 5, Rahul Gandhi personally met with the grieving families and subsequently addressed the issue with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Expressing his deep concern, Rahul Gandhi conveyed his sentiments to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath through a letter, urging him to enhance the compensation for the bereaved families promptly. In a social media post shared in Hindi, Rahul Gandhi emphasised the importance of collective support and condolences for those affected by the tragedy.
"The families affected by the Hathras stampede are in deep sorrow, and it is our responsibility to stand by them in this difficult time," Rahul Gandhi stated in his online communication.
The stampede occurred on July 2 during a 'Satsang' event led by self-styled godman Suraj Pal Singh, also known as 'Bhole Baba', in Fulari village, Hathras. The incident led to a massive loss of lives as devotees gathered for the religious event.
In response to the tragic event, authorities have taken swift action. Devprakash Madhukar, the main accused in the case, was recently arrested after being on the run. He appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court and was subsequently remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
During the court proceedings, questions arose about the permissions granted for the gathering, with Madhukar confirming that he had obtained permission from the SDM for an assembly of 80,000 people.
The arrest of Madhukar, who had been absconding and was subject to a substantial reward for his capture, marks a significant development in the investigation. Additionally, two other suspects, Ramprakash Shakya and Sanju Yadav, were also apprehended by the police.
