On the anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar’s birth, Rahul Gandhi issued a defiant vow to protect the legacy of the Constitution "until my very last breath", alleging that systematic efforts are underway to dismantle Babasaheb’s lifelong work. The Congress leader, currently serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, claimed that democratic institutions are being hollowed out and that the fundamental ethos of equality is currently under sustained attack.

The Congress party used the occasion to mount a staunch defence of the constitutional framework. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge described the current political climate as a "conspiratorial attack" on the nation’s founding principles. Paying tribute to the man widely regarded as the architect of modern India, Kharge noted that Ambedkar was far more than a legal scholar; he was a "relentless warrior" for the virtues of liberty, equality, and fraternity.

Reflecting on the vision of an empowered India, Rahul Gandhi remarked that the Constitution was never just a legal document, but a moral compass intended to provide dignity to every citizen. His fears stemmed from the fact that the rights provided in it are being violated by “certain forces,” who wish to damage the legacy left behind by Ambedkar. The great man himself said that the very essence of the nation was based on these principles, and that he would defend them with all his heart.

In her message of gratitude towards the Father of the Constitution, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra referred to it as a “protective shield” for all Indians. Her views on his legacy revolve around how his efforts made sure that the voices of the downtrodden were included in the freedom struggle. The only true manner in which one can pay homage to him is with a solemn oath to look after the interests of every individual, no matter what their background.

Dr Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, and despite having passed away decades ago, his impact on the nation-state remains unmatched. As the principal author of the Constitution, his warnings of how fragile democracy can be still resound among those who have taken up the role of opposition, seeing the soul of the country under threat.
