The Rajasthan Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, on Thursday approved the Rajasthan Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026, which proposes a ban on polygamy and introduces common provisions governing marriage, maintenance and live-in relationships.
Law Minister Jogaram Patel said the proposed legislation would not apply to tribal communities. A committee had earlier been formed to study UCC laws in Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Assam. After examining the provisions in these states, the committee submitted its report to the Rajasthan government, on the basis of which the Bill was drafted.
Under the proposed law, marriage registration will become mandatory within 60 days of marriage after the legislation comes into force. However, failure to register a marriage within the stipulated period will not invalidate the marriage.

Government employees will also be required to submit marriage registration certificates as part of their service records. Action may be taken against employees who fail to comply with the registration requirement, Patel said.
The Bill also seeks to prohibit polygamy in the state.
The proposed UCC provides a common legal framework for personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, replacing separate religious personal laws in areas covered by the legislation.
If enacted, Rajasthan would become the latest state to introduce a UCC framework, following Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Assam, while Madhya Pradesh has also introduced legislation on the issue.
The Rajasthan government is expected to place the Bill before the state legislature for consideration.
