Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday reaffirmed India’s commitment to national security, warning that any attempt to attack the country would be met with a strong and fitting response. His remarks come amid heightened tensions with Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terrorist attack.
Speaking at the Sanskriti Jagran Mahotsav in Delhi, Singh stated, “As a defence minister, it is my responsibility to ensure the security of the country's borders along with my soldiers. It is my responsibility to give a befitting reply to those who dare to attack our country.”
Singh’s comments carry added weight in the context of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. India has accused Pakistan of orchestrating the assault, and the situation between the two countries continues to deteriorate.
Senior Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singh himself, have repeatedly vowed a strong response to any aggression. The pressure appears to be mounting on Islamabad, which is reportedly feeling the heat over its alleged involvement.
During his address, Singh also praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, highlighting his work ethic, perseverance, and unwavering resolve in confronting threats to national security. He pointed to Modi’s firm stance on counterterrorism and willingness to act decisively when needed.
India has previously responded with force to attacks originating from Pakistani soil. Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the Indian armed forces carried out surgical strikes following the 2016 Uri attack and launched the Balakot airstrikes in retaliation for the 2019 Pulwama bombing. Both operations targeted Pakistan-backed terrorist infrastructure and marked significant shifts in India’s strategic posture.
Following the recent Pahalgam attack, Prime Minister Modi once again vowed that the perpetrators and their supporters would be identified, hunted down, and punished “beyond imagination.”
As tensions escalate, Pakistan has reportedly placed its security forces, intelligence agencies, and military on high alert in anticipation of possible Indian retaliation. The growing pressure from both government and opposition leaders in India suggests that a robust response may be imminent.
