Rakesh Aggarwal, a seasoned counter-terrorism specialist, has been appointed Director General of the National Investigation Agency, India’s premier anti-terror body.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet cleared Aggarwal’s appointment as NIA chief for a fixed tenure until August 31, 2028, the date of his superannuation, the Personnel Ministry said.
A 1994-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Aggarwal is currently serving as Special Director General in the agency. He had been holding additional charge as Director General following the premature repatriation of Sadanand Vasant Date to Maharashtra last month.

Date, who was heading the NIA, took charge as Director General of Police, Maharashtra, on January 3, creating a vacancy at the helm of the anti-terror agency. Aggarwal was subsequently named interim chief before being formally appointed to the post.
Widely regarded as an expert in counter-terrorism, terror financing and radicalisation, Aggarwal is known within security circles as an ace investigator with extensive experience in handling complex internal security and terrorism-related cases.
Over his career, Aggarwal has worked extensively with the Central Bureau of Investigation and has held several key assignments under both the central government and the Himachal Pradesh administration.
His appointment comes at a time when the NIA continues to handle a growing portfolio of cases linked to terror networks, cross-border extremism and organised modules operating across states.
