The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced its new Chief Minister for Delhi, and Rekha Gupta has emerged that name for the position of CM. The party has assigned National Secretary Om Prakash Dhankar and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad as central observers to oversee the selection process.

As the BJP prepares to announce the next Chief Minister of Delhi later today, sources indicate that the party may appoint someone from the Baniya community to lead the government in the national capital. Among the top contenders for the post, Vijender Gupta, Rekha Gupta, and Jitender Mahajan are from the Baniya community, which has a huge voter base in Delhi.

Rekha Gupta has been actively involved in politics for many years and holds a prominent position in the Delhi BJP.

She currently serves as the General Secretary of the state unit and has previously been the National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha. In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, she won from the Shalimar Bagh (North-West) constituency with a significant margin of votes.

Rekha Gupta secured victory from the Shalimar Bagh constituency in the recent Assembly elections. She defeated AAP’s Bandana Kumari and Congress’s Parveen Kumar Jain with a winning margin of 29,595 votes.

Her selection as Chief Minister follows the BJP’s decisive win in the Delhi elections held on February 8.

With this appointment, she becomes the only woman Chief Minister among the current BJP-led states. Her leadership is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the party’s governance in the national capital.

Before entering mainstream politics, Gupta was active in student leadership. She served as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union from 1996 to 1997. Later, she made her way into municipal politics, winning the Delhi Councillor elections from Uttari Pitampura in 2007 and securing re-election in 2012.

She also held the position of Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, further strengthening her political and administrative credentials.

A lawyer by profession, she has played a key role in BJP-led initiatives in the capital. Her experience in governance and public engagement makes her a strong candidate for the Chief Minister’s position.

The party is considering her leadership as a potential strategy to introduce a woman leader at the forefront of Delhi’s politics.

The announcement of the new Chief Minister was initially delayed due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from the United States.

The central observers are now assessing the political situation before finalising the new Chief Minister along with six cabinet ministers. Unlike some other BJP-ruled states, Delhi may not have a Deputy Chief Minister, according to reports.

Initially, there was speculation that New Delhi MLA Parvesh Verma was in contention for the role. However, recent reports suggested he hasd been sidelined, increasing the chances of Rekha Gupta securing the top position.
