Today marks the 210th birth anniversary of Bhanubhakta Acharya, revered as the first Nepali poet and commemorated for his profound contributions to Nepali literature, particularly his translation of the epic Ramayana.
Known as ‘Adikavi’ (the first poet), Bhanubhakta Acharya is credited with laying the foundational stones of the Nepali language through his literary works.
His translation of the Ramayana initially gained popularity through oral tradition, later compiled and published by Motirām Bhatta in the late 19th century as Bhanubhakta Ramayana.
Cultural reverence and global commemoration
Born on July 13, 1813, Bhanubhakta Acharya's influence extends beyond Nepal, resonating deeply among the Nepali-speaking communities in India, particularly in regions like West Bengal's Darjeeling, Terai region and Sikkim.
His birth anniversary, known as Bhanu Jayanti, is observed on the 29th day of the Nepali month of Ashadh, celebrated with poetry recitations, literary conferences, and cultural festivities across Nepal, India, Myanmar, Bhutan, and beyond.
The significance of Bhanu Jayanti lies in its celebration of Nepali culture, literature, and traditions.
Literary contributions and influence
It serves as a reminder of the rich literary heritage that Acharya epitomised, bridging the gap between Sanskrit-dominated literary traditions and vernacular Nepali, making literature more accessible to the broader populace.
During Acharya's time, South Asian languages, including Nepali, predominantly existed in oral forms, with limited written contexts and literary influences, unlike the dominance of Sanskrit in written texts.
This shift, championed by Acharya, not only popularised the language but also garnered acceptance from rulers and the broader community.
West Bengal CM pays homage
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid homage to Bhanubhakta Acharya on his birth anniversary, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping Nepali literature and society.
"My heartfelt tribute to Bhanubhakta Acharya, the pioneer poet of Nepali language, on this auspicious occasion of his birth anniversary," she expressed on X.
