The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a nationwide hunger strike for 24 hours on 15 October to support West Bengal doctors protesting the rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.
Junior doctors have been on a fast-unto-death protest for nine days, with three hospitalised so far.
The strike, led by the IMA’s Junior Doctors Network, will run from 6 am to 6 pm.
Additionally, doctors at private hospitals in West Bengal will partially cease work for 48 hours, starting from 14 October. Only emergency services will remain operational during this period.
The IMA expressed solidarity with the junior doctors and urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to meet their demands. The organisation’s president, RV Asokan, visited the protesting doctors, emphasising nationwide support. The IMA’s Bengal unit held its own fast in local branches.
The hunger strike aims to draw national attention to the crisis, as the doctors demand justice and improved security measures.
The IMA has called for all resident doctors to participate, with protests ideally taking place at medical colleges or nearby campuses.
