The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Ashish Pandey, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) youth leader, in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
His arrest is part of a broader investigation that has already seen four other individuals apprehended, including Dr Sandip Kumar Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college, who was arrested on September 2.
Pandey is accused of facilitating Ghosh's alleged financial misconduct at the institution. He had previously been questioned by the CBI for several hours last month, indicating he was already on the agency's radar.
In addition to his political ties, Pandey is reportedly a staff member at RG Kar Medical College, which has been in the news for a tragic incident involving the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on duty in August.
The CBI's investigation, initiated under the direction of the Calcutta High Court, has led to charges against Ghosh and three private entities based in Kolkata: Ma Tara Traders, Eshan Cafe and Khama Louha.
The CBI has conducted searches at the premises of these entities as part of its inquiry into the alleged financial irregularities and the circumstances surrounding the trainee doctor's death.
This case has drawn significant public attention not only due to the allegations of corruption but also because of the serious crime involving the medical trainee. The developments could have implications for the TMC's image and governance in West Bengal, especially as it relates to issues of safety and accountability in educational institutions.
