Union Minister Kiren Rijiju took aim at the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday, following praise from former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi for Gandhi’s positive stance on India-Pakistan relations. Gandhi has once again become a target for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) due to remarks from Pakistani politicians and celebrities.

Addressing Afridi’s comments, Rijiju claimed that Afridi and Pakistani politicians want to make Gandhi their leader. “Rahul Gandhi has been the darling of Pakistan!” Rijiju tweeted. He also shared a video of Afridi, in which the former cricketer describes Gandhi as a person with a “positive mindset” who seeks dialogue with everyone.

BJP leader Amit Malviya criticised Gandhi and the Congress, questioning, “Why is it that every India-hater finds a friend in Rahul Gandhi?” Challenging Gandhi’s loyalty to the nation, Malviya tweeted, “When enemies of Bharat start cheering for you, the people of India know exactly where your loyalties lie.

”During a discussion on Pakistan’s news channel about the recent controversy surrounding the India-Pakistan Asia Cup match, Afridi compared India to Israel. India faced Pakistan in the Asia Cup despite widespread calls from the Opposition and families of victims of the Pahalgam terror attack to boycott the match. Although India defeated Pakistan, a major controversy arose when Team India refused to shake hands with Pakistani players, neither at the toss nor at the end of the match.

The Opposition accused the BJP-led Union government of hypocrisy, alleging that the Centre allowed India to play against Pakistan for financial gain. Protests took place across various parts of the country, urging the public to boycott the match.
