In the wake of an attack on the National Investigation Team (NIA) in Purba Medinipur, West Bengal, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury expressed strong condemnation, stating that he cannot justify such assaults on central agencies.
He emphasised that the INDIA bloc has been actively protesting against the misuse of these agencies, highlighting the importance of approaching the judiciary to address any grievances.
The incident unfolded as some officers of the elite NIA faced disruption while conducting a probe related to a blast case in Purba Medinipur district. According to sources, the NIA team encountered resistance, with their vehicle allegedly being vandalised during the process of apprehending a suspect linked to the case. A video circulating on social media purportedly captured the locals attempting to prevent the NIA team from taking the suspect into custody.
This event follows a series of similar incidents, including the recent confrontation involving Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers in Sandeshkhali. During a raid on the residence of expelled TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan, the ED team faced harassment and assault by protesters. Such occurrences have raised concerns about the safety of central agency officials conducting investigations in the state.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose also weighed in on the matter, condemning the attack on NIA officials and stressing the need for a firm response to such incidents. Governor Bose emphasised that democracy cannot tolerate assaults on law enforcement agencies and underscored the importance of ensuring the safety of officials involved in critical operations.
The incident has sparked debates regarding the role of central agencies in states and the need for ensuring their safety while carrying out their duties. As tensions escalate, stakeholders are calling for measures to prevent further attacks and uphold the rule of law in the state.
