The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday maintained that India and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to combating global and regional terrorism, while Russia reiterated its unwavering support for India’s bid for permanent membership in a reformed United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
The developments were part of two high-level meetings held in Moscow on 19 and 20 December, the ministry informed.
The 13th meeting of the India-Russia Joint Working Group (JWG) on Counter-Terrorism Cooperation and the sixth round of consultations on United Nations-related issues aimed at enhancing bilateral ties in these critical areas.
"In the 13th JWG on counter-terrorism, both sides shared their experiences in countering terrorism including cross-border terrorism, extremism and agreed to enhance cooperation to address problems of radicalisation as well as terror financing," the MEA stated.
Discussions encompassed current terrorist threats globally and regionally, as well as the misuse of emerging technologies for terrorism. Both nations reaffirmed their resolve to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation bilaterally and on multilateral platforms.
During consultations on UN-related issues, India and Russia exchanged views on various global and regional developments, particularly UNSC reforms.
“Russia reiterated its support for India as a permanent member of a reformed UN Security Council,” the MEA affirmed.
The Indian delegation was led by Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) in the MEA, while the Russian side was headed by Sergey Vershinin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Officials from relevant departments and agencies from both sides participated in the meetings.
Additionally, Lal met Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin to deliberate on international and regional matters, including the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
