The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday fired another salvo at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the Sandeshkhali issue, alleging that she has given “protection” to TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh due to her “appeasement politics”.
Appeasement matters more than justice for the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress, BJP spokesperson Prem Shukla told reporters, demanding immediate arrest of the TMC strongman who is the key accused in the case of land grab and sexual assault on women in Sandeshkhali by those affiliated to the party.
Shukla cited TMC leader Kunal Ghosh’s statement that Sheikh will be arrested within a week to assert that it is now clear that the TMC knows his whereabouts.
“It clearly means that Mamata Banerjee has given protection to a rapist,” he said, targeting opposition INDIA bloc for its silence on the issue.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai wrote to CM Mamata Banerjee today, seeking strict action against culprits responsible for sexually assaulting tribal women and grabbing land in Sandeshkhali.
Sai, too, accused Mamata for putting the lives of tribal people in danger for “appeasement and vote bank politics”. He appealed to the TMC supremo to rise above political considerations for the sake of humanity.
The Chhattisgarh chief minister shared a picture of the letter written in Hindi on his X handle.
“I am sending a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Ms @MamataOfficial seeking stern action against the culprits involved in the crime. Hope Mamata ji will take cognisance of this letter and do justice to the victims of West Bengal”, he added.
Sai highlighted the rich culture of West Bengal and its history of women empowerment. And invoked Swami Vivekananda to Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay to Rabindranath Tagore to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, and Dr Syama Prasad Mukherjee.
Banerjee, on the other hand, has accused the BJP of stoking the issue and claimed that the party is behind some of the complaints.
