In a fresh accusation against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh has alleged that the BJP is attempting to break his party by offering large sums of money to AAP candidates ahead of the Delhi Assembly election results.
According to Singh, the BJP has allegedly approached seven AAP candidates with offers of ₹15 crore each to switch allegiance to the BJP.
Singh, however, refrained from naming the candidates involved in the alleged plot. He claimed that, just a day after the polls for the 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly were held, these seven candidates reportedly received calls from BJP representatives.
Singh stated that the BJP's goal is to lure these individuals away from AAP by offering significant financial incentives.
The AAP MP made these claims during a press conference, where he said, "Seven MLAs of AAP have received phone calls from certain BJP elements, who have offered them Rs 15 crore each to leave the party and join the BJP."
Singh further emphasised that these actions demonstrate the BJP's attempt to undermine AAP's position ahead of the election results.
The Delhi election held on February 5 saw a voter turnout of just over 60%, with most exit polls suggesting that the BJP might make a comeback in the capital, which could potentially disrupt AAP's plans.
However, Singh asserted that the BJP had already accepted defeat even before the vote counting on February 8, and was now resorting to political tactics such as attempting to break up other parties in a bid to strengthen their own hold.
In his remarks, Singh urged the AAP MLAs to report such incidents and take precautionary measures. He advised the candidates to record any such phone calls and even encouraged them to secretly film any meetings with BJP representatives to capture evidence of this alleged effort to poach AAP members.
This development has added to the ongoing tension in Delhi's political landscape, with both parties now waiting for the results. While Singh and AAP continue to accuse the BJP of using underhanded tactics, the BJP has yet to respond to these serious allegations.
The alleged attempts to weaken AAP by enticing its members with large sums of money is seen as a part of a larger strategy by the BJP to assert its influence over the national capital.
This has left the political atmosphere in Delhi charged, as the city awaits the final results that will determine the future of its Legislative Assembly.
