SC Collegium recommends elevation of 4 judges as Chief Justices

Justice V Kameswar Rao, presently posted at the Delhi HC, has been recommended for elevation to the Patna HC as chief justice, while Justice Ravindra V Ghuge, who is judge at the Bombay HC, has been recommended for elevation to the Calcutta HC as its Chief Justice.Allahabad HC judge Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi has been named as Chief Justice of the Bombay HC. Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra of the Punjab and Haryana HC has been recommended as its Chief Justice.

The Supreme Court collegium has recommended elevation of four judges as Chief Justices of different high courts.The collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant took the decision in a meeting held on August 6.

 

Justice V Kameswar Rao, presently posted at the Delhi High Court, has been recommended for elevation to the Patna High Court as chief justice, while Justice Ravindra V Ghuge, who is judge at the Bombay High Court, has been recommended for elevation to the Calcutta High Court as its Chief Justice.

 

Allahabad High Court judge Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi has been named as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has been recommended as its Chief Justice.In another decision, the collegium has recommended transfer of two judges of the high courts.Justice Manash Ranjan Pathak, presently posted at Orissa High Court, has been transferred to Gujarat.Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra of Orissa High Court has been transferred to the Chhattisgarh High Court.

 

 

Justice Ghuge is presently serving as the acting Chief Justice of Bombay High Court.He was elevated as the judge of the High Court in 2013.He was appointed as acting Chief Justice of the High Court after then Chief Justice Justice Shree Chandrashekhar was elevated to Supreme Court in June this year.Calcutta is presently functioning with 41 judges while its sanctioned strength is 72.

 

If approved by the Central government, Justice Tripathi will be the 38th Chief Justice of the High Court and the second Chief Justice from Allahabad. He served as the additional chief standing counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh since October 2007.Justice Tripathi was elevated as an additional judge of the High Court on September 27, 2013. He was made a permanent judge on April 10, 2015.He is the second senior most judge at the High Court and has presided over the High Court's principal bench at Allahabad.

 

 

Justice Sudhir Singh is presently the acting Chief Justice for Patna High Court.He was elevated as additional judge of Delhi High Court in April 2013 and was made permanent on March 2015. At Karnataka, he also served as acting Chief Justice in May 2025. He was repatriated to Delhi High Court on July 21, 2025.Patna High Court is presently functioning with 43 judges as against its sanctioned strength of 53 judges.

 

 

 

Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra appeared as arguing counsel for several statutory bodies, including NOIDA, the Ghaziabad Development Authority, the Allahabad Development Authority, IFFCO, Indian Oil Corporation and the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation, and also served as senior counsel for the State Government in important matters.He served at the Allahabad High Court up to July 20, 2025 before being transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he joined on July 21, 2025.He was appointed acting Chief Justice on June 1, 2026, following the elevation of then Chief Justice Sheel Nagu to the Supreme Court.
